Sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, Cagle beat competitors from eight Northern California districts and Hawaii. CAGLE Salinas High School yearlings end Palma's 23-game win streak The Salinas High School freshmen boys' basketball team ended Palma's 23-game winning streak with a 41-38 overtime victory earlier this week. Gerado Bedolla and Scott Chase sparked Salinas (17-8) with 12 and 10 points respectively. Ben Tucker paced Palma (23-1) with 12 points.
Salinas won the junior varsity contest with a 64-45 victory over York. Chris Bunch led Salinas with 17 points. Jesse Perez sparked York with 19 points. Three baseball arbitration cases settled as players double salaries NEW YORK Kirby Puckett, Eric Davis and Tony Fernandez settled their arbitration cases and doubled their salaries, and Zane Smith lost his case to the Atlanta Braves as the arbitration field dropped to 27. Puckett, fourth in the American League with a .332 batting average, will earn $1,090,000 from Minnesota, a 157 percent increase from his 1987 salary of $425,000.
Davis, fourth in the National League with 37 home runs, will get $899,000 from Cincinnati, a 172 percent increase from last season's salary of $330,000. In other baseball news: GUILTY PLEA: LaMarr Hoyt, a former Cy Young Award winning pitcher, pleaded guilty in Columbia, S.C., to possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. He was sentenced by Special Judge Frank Eppes to years in prison. Eppes suspended the term to seven months and ordered that the sentence be concurrent with a sentence Hoyt must serve for a probation violation. University of Illinois sports put on probation by NCAA URBANA, Ill.
The University of Illinois, which admitted to football recruiting violations during the tenure of former Coach Mike White, was placed on probation by the NCAA but received no major penalty.
