What do the lyrics to Red Right Hand mean? ›

Co-writer Mick Harvey recalled that the song originated during the songwriting process for the band's 1994 album Let Love In. The lyrics describe "a shadowy, alluring, and manipulative figure, stalking the land and striking a combination of fear and awe everywhere he goes" who is "seemingly part deity, part demon".

Known as the "Father of Texas" and the founder of Anglo Texas, he led the second and, ultimately, the successful colonization of the region by bringing 300 families and their slaves from the United States to the Tejas region of Mexico in 1825.

The phrase was inspired by John Milton's “Paradise Lost” where the “red right hand” represents divine vengeance. The violence of the song carried over into Cave's next album Murder Ballads, which references both Milton and “Red Right Hand” in its opening track “Song of Joy”.

In this context the red right hand signifies divine wrath. By extension, the red right hand can be applied to all the Holy Trinity, the Angel of Death, or any agent of Divine Retribution. Jesus Christ sits on God's right hand, so such a symbol could be used to mark a Messiah.
